CHINA'S HOPE IN ENGLAND IN THE
SINO-BRITISH NEGOTIATION.

The Sino-British negotiation now in progress has given us a gleam of hope for the ending of the Canton-Hongkong Strike and the severance of our economic relations with England, which has been maintained for over a year, and a settlement of the question of the Shakee tragedy which has been pending for a similar period. For now the Sino-British negotiation has had a successful start, a matter which shows that England has at least recognised the following two facts:-
(1) The National Government at Canton is a substantial one which is capable of representing the people of the whole province of Kwong Tung.
(2) The revolutionary forces at work in Kwong Tung have
a very strong foundation which can never be shaken
either by force, temptation, intrigues or any other
means.
It was principally owing to England's refusal of recognise
these two facts, that no Sino-British negotation could be
brought about during the past two years, and the successful
start of the present negotiation proves that England has de
facto made a silent recognition of the two facts.
The Canton-Hongkong Strike, the severance of our
economic relations with England and the Shakee tragedy are all one with the incident of May 30th, and properly speaking the settlement of these questions should be discussed in connection with the May 30th incident. But at present, the
